DIVIN MARQUIS

Marquis de Sade

The Marquis comes from a family of aristocrate, from the french nobility. He was a famous writter and philosopher, he inspired a lot the surrealist artists and writters of the beginning of the 20th century (Appolinaire). He was also admired by writters like Sainte-Beuve, Baudelaire and Flaubert.
He criticized the government (« La philosophie dans le boudoir »), the King and Monarchy, Republic, Empire), and was sent to jail several times for his strong critics and books. He spent 27 years of his life in jail! The Marquis de Sade also wrote a lot about eroticism (« Justine ou les malheurs de la vertu », « Les 120 jours de Sodome »). He wrote several plays as well, and a lot of letters.
He was named « Divin Marquis » in the 19th century in reference to the « Divin Arétien » who was one of the first eroticism writters of the modern time!

HISTORY & FACTS

For many years, Sade's descendants regarded his life and work as a scandal to be suppressed. This did not change until the mid-twentee's century, when the Comte Xavier de Sade reclaimed the Marquis title, long fallen into disuse, on his visiting cards, and took an interest in his ancestor's writings. At that time, the "Divin Marquis" of legend was so unmentionable in his own family that Xavier de Sade only learned of him in the late 1940s when approached by a journalist. He subsequently discovered a store of Sade's papers in the family château at Condé-en-Brie, in the Champagne region, and worked with scholars for decades to enable their publication. His youngest son, Thibault de Sade, has continued the collaboration.
The Marquis de Sade influenced writers such as Baudelaire, Flaubert, Huysmans or Apollinaire. In the beginning of the 20th century, after the WWI, a new litterary and artistic movement appears. It is called surrealism. It was largely inspired by writers and philisophers such as the Marquis de Sade. Artists such as Delacroix , Rodin and Degas, but also Géricault , Ingres, Gustave Moreau, and even Cezanne. Not to mention Picasso and the Surrealists , the only one who openly claim they were influenced by the Marquis. They are inspired to show art without boundary. Many of Dali’s paintings were also inspired by the Divin Marquis.

JUSTINE OU LES MALHEURS DE LA VERTU 1787

The heroin of the book Justine or The Misfortunes of Virtue was Sade’s whole-time favorite character among those he created. Writting Justine helped him overcome the harshness of emprisonment. Therefore, it seemed natural for the Maison de Sade to make a wine “Divine Justine” paying a tribute to this special character.
Justine is a classic novel written by Marquis de Sade in 1787. There is no standard edition of this text in hardcover, having passed into the public domain. The text itself is often incorporated into collections of Sade's work.
Justine is set just before the French Revolution in France and tells the story of a young woman who goes under the name of Therese. Her story is recounted to Madame de Lorsagne while defending herself for her crimes, en route to punishment and death. She explains the series of misfortunes which have led her to be in her present situation.
Justine was an early work by the Marquis de Sade, written in two weeks in 1787 while imprisoned in the Bastille. It is a novella with relatively little of the obscenity which characterized his later writing, as it was writ- ten in the classical style (which was fashionable at the time), with much verbose and metaphorical description.
Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the arrest of the anonymous author of Justine and Juliette, and as a result Sade was incarcerated for the last 13 years of his life.
